Northark Approves Hike in Tuition, Parking Fees

It will cost more to attend and for students to park at North Arkansas College next semester.

The Northark Board of Trustees voted 5-2 to approve a $3 per credit hour parking fee, along with a $3 per credit hour increase in tuition.

The parking fee is earmarked for financing a new on-campus police department, under the supervision of Physical Plant Director Kevin Somers. He says the on-campus force will, in effect, be an extension of the Harrison Police Department.

The hike in tuition goes for an increase in staff benefits, along with retention and recruitment of students.

Trustees Marcus Jones, Wayne Thompson, Jane Adair, Scott Miller and Kirk Campbell voted in favor of the increases, while Jim Milum and Jerry Cash voted no. Trustee Sara Jo Fendley was absent.

I'm ok with this. I'd feel more comfortable with police on campus. I do however disagree with an increase in staff benefits. There are teachers there that don't do their job and need to take responsibility as the teacher before reaping benefits they didn't earn.
